Teaching English as a Second Language Through Paremias

The paper studies the issue of using paremias in the process of foreign language teaching. Paremias are interpreted as folk sayings characterized by their short, concise form that offer a wealth of cultural and linguistic insight. The linguistic nature of paremias according to main linguistic research trends is described in different linguistic planes, includi ng linguacultural, discourse, and comparative studies. Paremiological units are described as a useful tool for teaching a foreign language since they help develop students’ vocabulary and grammar, critical thinking and communication skills, sociocultural competence, as well as improve learners’ motivation by creating a dynamic and engaging learning environment. The most productive classroom activities using paremias in the ESL context as a source for practising and reinforcing English langua ge skills are described
